Walter Jones Bellamy (Born July 24, 1939 in New Bern, North Carolina, USA) is a retired American professional basketball player known as "Big Bell".

Position: C/PF
Height: 6' ft 11" in (2,11 m)
Weight: 225 lb (102 kg)
College : Indiana
Number: 8#

SHORT BASKETBALL BIOGRAPHY:
Indiana University
Walt Bellamy, averaging 20,5 points a game and shoting 51.7% from the foor, was named An All-American in both his junior and senior year. He left Indiana University with the most rebounds in a career with 1,088 in only 70 games while averaging 15,5 a game!

The 1960 Olympics
Bellamy was the starting center on the gold medal winning American basketball team at the 1960 Summer Olympics. His team with future Hall-of-Famers Jerry West, Oscar Robertson and Jerry Lucas finished all games undefeated.

NBA
Bellamy had a stellar 14 year career in the NBA and was the NBA first overall draft pick in 1961. Bellamy was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in 1962 after having arguably one of the three greatest rookie seasons in NBA history (along with Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson). His 31.6 point per game average that season is second all-time for a rookie to Wilt Chamberlain's 37.6, and the 19.0 rebounds per game he averaged that season is third best all-time for a rookie (to Chamberlain and Bill Russell). Bellamy also led the NBA in field goal percentage in his rookie season, and had a 23 point 17 rebound performance in the 1962 NBA All-Star Game.

Due to trades to teams with offset game schedules during the 1968-69 season, Bellamy set the still-standing record for NBA games played in a single season with 88.

Bellamy ended his NBA career with 20,941 points and 14,241 rebounds. Bellamy was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.

  • one of the best centers (top 3) imo of all time ;)

  • wilt looked like he was trying to avoid being kneed at the 3:27 mark, but still a good dunk by bellamy

  • walt bellamy was 245lbs as a pro

  • very fine-Chicago Zephyr

  • Walt was my favorite player in the mid-1970s. Maravich to Bellamy was a thing of beauty.

  • @WiltatKansas

Wilt Chamberlain in his first game against Walt Bellamy in 1961 held him scoreless in the first half and scored over 50 (or possibly even 60). In their second meeting that same season Chamberlain did the same thing.

  • @ddenuci Well, if it's true that Wilt blocked 11 times Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in a game, so must be true that legend too...

  • @WiltatKansas : Don't know how much of it is true and how much is legend, but Wilt claims in one of his books that the first time they matched up in Bells' rookie year, he blocked Bellamy's first 9 shots of the game.
