I think the cochlear implant is a wonderful and marvelous technological achievement and all the nay-sayers and god peddlers can fuck off back to the dark ages. Its these kinds of people who think vaccines are made by the devil and refuse blood transfusions. They hold back science and the scientific process .

I'm from India and my child has received cochlear implant 2 years back. I believe that all children who need an implant must get it, and if HE had given me enough money, I'ld have purchased implant for each deaf child of this world. People who are against it are fools. If they cannot listen, they do not know the meaning of it. Ask them, What if they lose their sight and asked to study in Braile; even blind survive in this world..... Then they would understand the meaning of opposing...

What's the difference between the CI and a vaccine? Both change the body from it's original state. Trolls are everywhere. I'm sure they are just arguing to piss people off.

@JilltheSex I have no issue with a grown adult wanting to be deaf. My issue is entirely with people who would look at a device that might give a child some form of normality in their life and help them hear their parents voice only for them to say. "OH THATS COMPLETELY WRONG, YOUR TAKING AWAY WHO YOUR CHILD IS AS A PERSON"
If someone likes being deaf then that is fine they have the right to whatever they wish but don't take away a childs chance at a normal life because of your own pride.

The parents who are against these implants are retards. They should be happy that we have the technology to do this. Its as if they like the attention they get from other people when they find out their child is deaf.
Whoever considers being Deaf part of who they are as a person is an idiot. Being Deaf is something meant to be overcome not something you just give into.
Anyone who believes this technology shouldn't be used because "It strips someone of their cultural identity" is just making excuses because they are too afraid to take on the world. Life suddenly becomes harder when you have to be seen for who you are as a person instead of your handicap. Sorry if the truth hurts.

@Bloodshotbuddah I have a serious issue with what you have posted in your comment. I notice that you capitalized deaf (implying that you would have pride for the deaf community) but you're probably just ignorant and think that you usually capitalize this word. Who are you to tell someone that they are stupid for being comfortable with who they are? That is not what this controversy is about.

It's nice that you created a short video that framed the controversy - unfortunately, you didn't really present the controversy, you only presented the pro-CI perspective. :P

@Tyiranie I realize I leaned more towards pro-CI but this was for a project in which I had to present my side of the controversy so that is why that happened.

you say that cochlear implants allow them to live in 'both worlds' but in reality how many parents of children with CI's teach thier child ASL as an access language into the Deaf world? not many- if any! I have no problem with parents decided to get thier deaf child implanted, what I do have a problem with is not also teaching them ASL as a back up for communication or cultural identity. when deaf children with CIs learn true ASL , its THEN that they will be able to be in both worlds.

I made this video for an english project in which we choose an issue we are interested in based on a research paper we wrote and have since revised it. I completely agree with you. I think that is exactly the issue. Children should have access to both ASL and spoken language and we shouldn't hinder their opportunity either way.
