It is fake. Do a search on yahoo, and there's an article titled "Wizards pull engagement prank during game at MCI Center" dated February 25, 2004 from the Wizards' homepage.
If someone I'd ordinarily said yes to did something this awful to me, I'd say no. The humiliation was done to her from him, and not vice versa. Of course, this is a famous hoax anyway.
