Installing Basement Stairs -- Andy Bell of Handyman Matters discusses how to install stairs in the basement. You need to measure the distance from the bottom floor to the ceiling and you can buy a whole set of stairs at a home store. If you pick the size of the tread and rise, then the store will put it together for you. You use a bracket to attach the stairs to the top. Carpet goes over the top of the wood stairs (poplar or pine) or you can get them in oak so you can sand and stain them.
