Chevy Volt test drive - 1 Dec. 2009. Although the sound isn't great from this camera, this clip shows that the turn-on of the gasoline engine in the Chevy Volt is very subtle. The Chevy Volt operates in pure electric mode until the battery is depleted. After that, the gas engine comes on to extend the range of the vehicle to that of a "normal" gasoline car.
