BBA T-SHIRTS ARE FOR SALE:
http://www.betterbeerauthority.com/p/better-beer-authority-t-shirts.html

At 12 percent, this beer is ready to knock a strong man down. Is the Better Beer Authority man enough for this strong brown ale which is aged in a barrel made of Palo Santo wood from South America. Sam Calagione, brewer from the TV show "Brewmasters", presents us with a complex and challenging beer that may be a little too much for Joe 6-Pack.

Partial Transcript: "On Tap -- Palo Santo Marron

Hi. I'm James Knott and today we are talking about Palo Santo Marron from the Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton Delaware. This year round release was first available in 2007.

It is 12% ABV, 50 IBUs and unfiltered. The brewery recommends drinking it from a pint glass. The name comes from the fact that the beer is aged in a 10,000 gallon brewing vessel made from Palo Santo wood from Paraguay. They say that the wood imparts notes of caramel and vanilla to the flavor.

In Spanish, "palo santo" means "holy tree" and "marron" means "brown". Dogfish Head describes it as a brown ale that is "highly roasty and malty".

Q&A Is Joe 6-pack going to like this beer? Does the Palo Santo aging make the flavor unique?

Palo Santo Marron gets a (???) on the BBA scale. What wood do you think is best for aging beer? Let us know in the comment section.

Thanks for watching. I'm James Knott and this is your Better Beer Authority."

  • You guys are fucking retards. None of you know what you are talking about.

  • @KCbeernerd Thanks for the constructive criticism. :) This is not my favorite episode. I hope you will check out some of our other episodes or our Top 10 Beers of 2011 video. We have come along way since we recorded this video.

  • Well like most craft beers as they warm up...more flavors become present... that's prolly why in Europe they drink brews at room temp. But I love Palo santos and I think u guys should definitely revisit this one...

  • @TOPSHELFdmax02 I definitely want to revisit this one. I would drink it tonight if I could get my hands on one. :)

  • Who the hell cares what Bud/Miller/Coors drinkers think about beer?

  • p.s goes good with neutral flavored high quality jerky.

  • I agree with some of this, but I think its really a beer that you have to drink a few times to really appreciate. Its very powerful upfront, but the beer is very rewarding after about 30 minutes. I think the score is too low. Id give it a 9 within its prescribed context. Obviously not a every day beer but on the right ocassion its a real beast.

  • @maestr0123 We need to revisit this beer in another year or two. Thanks for watching. Check out our Dale's Pale Ale episode. It's one of my favorites. I really liked that beer.

  • @AgileHProductions I happen to love Palo Santo Marron. I heard the panelists talking about a black licorice taste. I don't happen to agree with this, because I've hated black licorice since childhood. I get more of the caramel notes in it myself. Your panelists were right in that you have to let it warm up a bit first. This beer is definitely not for 'Joe Sixpack' who's only goal is to slam down one after another at a ball game, but by those who like, say, a good sipping whiskey.
