Niemand kan met zijn naam uit de voeten. De muziek van Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (1970), meestal gewoon Gurrumul, raakt echter vele mensen. Zijn heldere stem en sober geïnstrumenteerde nummers maakten artiesten als Björk, Anthony (and the Johnsons), Sting, Peter Gabriel en Elton John tot trouwe fans.
Gurrumul werd geboren in Australië, bij de kust van Arnhemland. De blinde zanger maakte deel uit van de band Yothu Yindi voordat hij solo verder ging. Zijn eerste album, met ingetogen nummers, veelal gezongen in bijna uitgestorven Aboriginaltalen als Gälpu, Gumatj en Djambarrpuynu, kwam uit in 2008 en veroverde in hoog tempo zijn eigen land en het Westen.
Hij begeleidt zichzelf op een linkshandige gitaar en speelt ook nog drum, toetsen en didgeridoo.
