My feelings on the subject are very abstract, as you can probably tell, but an obscure showtune you've probably never heard of says: "I don't give a damn about life after death, but I've got to get some proof that there's some life after birth," and my concern is the alienation of life after birth in favor of life after death. Your thoughts are always appreciated.

Living in preparation for death is something we all have to do, at least all of us who know we are going to die, whatever our religious beliefs or lack of them. Love is what makes life beautiful, and its also what gets you the goodies in the afterlife in most metaphysical systems, so it all boils down to the one same problem, of learning how to harmonize yourself, while staying true to yourself. You can do it, beautiful. Patience.

Sorry to hear about the suicidality. I know how that is.

I once heard, "When you wake up every morning, you should think of a reason to live," and for a long time, i couldn't determine a 'meaning' to life, but it hit me like a bolt of lightning one morning, and i couldn't believe how long it took me to figure out: The meaning of life is to live it. Yes, death is something we must prepare for, and i don't fear it (though i do fear intense suffering beforehand). The contrast one must draw is between preparing for death and living to die.

If you believe in reincarnation, as I do, then death is just the beginning to your new life on earth. I do believe in a heaven, or whatever you want to call the space you go when you die. I just picture it as a holding place for your soul until your ready to be brought back into the Earth. I also believe in a Nirvana, or a permanent heaven, that you can only get into when your soul is perfected. For example Jesus after achieving the Christ consciousness.

I've heard similar theories before, and, personally, if i had to pick a 'favourite' afterlife belief, this is certainly it. I like the idea of getting to go through life until your soul learns everything it needed to know; it's a view that marks death as a 'rest stop' on the much greater journey of life. Being the hardcore skeptic i am, i can't bring myself to believe that explanation, but it suits me quite a bit better than eternal bliss or eternal torment, and purgatory in between.

i just read that book it was fucking great and i saw the movie in french(cause there will be an american version with igy pop). The movie looked like the comic book moving it was amazing.

The book is better, but only because it has more of the story; personally, i wish they'd done the whole graphic novel and cut it up in to 1 hour TV spots like a soap opera so that they wouldn't have had to trim the story down.

So,if we can never know, we should never try to know. That way, you are free to live your life without having to endure the frustration of not being able to know the real truth.

before you know it you'll be 60 and look back and ask yourself yet another question... why didn't i just live life and squeeze every second out of it. no one knows what happens when the clock stops so why waste valuable time and energy debating and thinking that your so smart by unravelling lifes mysteries. focus on whats in front of you now not what might be later.

And another contrast one must draw is between "figuring out" and knowing. I've seen some of your earlier political commentaries, and you are clearly a very intelligent person, but also a sensitive one. For myself, the trick is to keep the figuring out in its place, to keep it from crowding out the knowing what is the way of meaning for you at each moment, or at least frequently,& also know how to get through those times of "spiritual dryness" when nothing seems to have any meaning.

I want to donate my body to Dr. Gunter von Hagen. He's the inventor of the body worlds exhibit. I want my corpse turned inside out and put on display in museums throughout the world. I figure I won't be there so it won't matter. Of course, I don't plan on it happening for another fifty years or so...

I practice an obscure 13th century Japanese Buddhism. Our concepts of life, death, afterlife and even self and god are all crude attempts to explain experiences that transcend words. Believing in them takes away from life because it distracts us from the real task of making the world a better place now. And you ARE very spiritual; you manifest it in questioning. It's the best way because eventually you figure things out for yourself.

I would have to say that the belief of death being better than life subtracts from life depends on how much you really appreciate your own life. If you're in such a rush for death you're probably more likely to take the quickest road toward it. It depends on the person and their own life experiences. But suicides are yet to be believed done in acts of a clean mental state...

I love your philosophical vids and thought. I'm a philosopher minor in college right now but find philosophy to be a beautiful tool which we should all learn to utilize within our lives. It's a great exercise for your mind and self reflection. I know this is slightly off topic but it's just always a great feeling to see someone else doing what I wish more people would do. considering the trash that is being produced as of late the movie is awesome but the book is funnier and does have more of a story.
