I was learning Deutsche back in school, one thing that helped me was like you said the podcast, I always listen to them while sleeping and it helped me out real well, Not sure if it is a safe way to learn though....

Listen Japanese Pop music is great!
Tsunku (つんく?) is one of the best song writers ever. His songs fill me with happiness.
Why learn Japanese? Because it makes me happy.

漫画は こちら葛飾区亀有公園前派出所 などがいいのでは。。
ユーチューブで同窓会といういいドラマもあるのでそれもおすすめ。。
