Acclaimed jazz accordionist Kenny Kotwitz performs "The Shadow of Your Smile" in Detroit, Sept. 14, 1997. Kotwitz, a polka whiz who began playing at the age of 5, made his national debut on "The Lawrence Welk Show" while still in high school. He developed into a renowned jazz player, session man, arranger and composer and currently teaches lessons in Simi Valley, CA.

From about 0:15 to 2:08 the song is haunting and moody, heavy jazz and just so thick with feeling. I have youtube on my cellphone and frequently play just this section as I'm headed to class in the morning at my university.
The other improvisational stuff that comes after it really showcases Mr. Kotwitz's skill, but I prefer the head-nodding, smoky theatre feelings evoked by that first segment of the song.
