This little guy is about 3.5 months old. He was brought into the pound in a cat trap as a feral (wild) cat. Feral cats are not stray cats. Feral cats have never belonged to anyone and are born in the wild or on the streets and are scared of humans, whereas stray cats are cats that have usually been dumped or abandoned and have been around humans before and are socialized.
When feral cats are brought to the shelter in cat traps, they are usually euthanized as they are not allowed to be adopted by the public because they are not tame cats. So only rescues can pull them and they rarely do because they can't be adopted. If feral kittens are trapped before they are 10 weeks old, they can usually be tamed. If they are over 10 weeks old, they will usually always be weary of humans.
This particular kitten was pulled from the pound (by a rescue) for a lady that wanted an outdoor feral cat in her coyote-safe backyard as a companion for a feral cat she was already feeding. The process is to put the cat in a cage in the backyard for a month so it becomes accustomed to its new surroundings before releasing it and then providing food, water and shetler.
Well when the rescuer went to set up the cage in the backyard, the kitten started meowing and putting his paws through the cage. He was not feral at all, just shy and scared! The rescuer could not use him as a feral backyard cat knowing he seemed like he could be tamed. She brought him home and he started showing signs of a kitty cold that he must have caught from the pound. He wouldn't eat and had to be force-fed for 5 days.
Now in his current foster home he has decided he LOVES humans! He is 100% a total lap cat, he loves to touch noses with you and be babied. And then, a week ago, he started playing fetch!!! We play fetch with him 2 or 3 times a day and he will bring his toy back to you every time. He will keep playing until he is panting!!
Lastly, this little guy is for ADOPTION. He has to be, by far, one of the best kittens I have ever fostered (and I've rescued & fostered more than a 100 kittens over the years). As smart and cute and loving as the little bugger is, he doesn't have a forever home :(

  • He actually meows a lot, especially if I STOP throwing the "ball" :)

He's very talkative like a Siamese. He even does this chirp thing like a bird :)

We've tamed feral kittens before, but there is no way this guy was ever feral. Someone probably caught him in a trap and took him to the pound where he was deemed feral because he was in a trap. More likely he was just a kitten they didn't want hanging around their house :(
