TheHaywire's Saby Reyes-Kulkarni interviews RPO trumpet player Herb Smith and drummer Sean Jefferson immediately after Jefferson backed Smith for a 2010 Rochester International Jazz Festival concert by Smith's jazz ensemble in the Rochester Public Library's reading garden. Smith and Jefferson discuss the intertwining histories of classical and jazz, how classical informs their respective composing methods, the push-pull between innovation and preservation, Smith's tune "Present Moment, No Blues," and approaching the drums from a harmonic perspective. Smith's jazz compositions can be heard on Trumpet Shall Sound, his solo debut as a leader. Jefferson, whose quartet (featuring Marcus Strickland) played RIJF in 2008, released his album, Dream Works, with the same quartet in 2010.
