I stumbled upon a fledgling killdeer in a field and it's parents both feign injuries in an attempt to lead you away from their young.

  • It pretends it has a broken wing to lead you away from the nest/chicks. When we were kids, we used to catch the babies (who run really fast) by going in the opposite direction the parents were going. No, we did not hurt the babies...just looked at them, put them down, and let them go back to mom and dad.

And no, birds don't abandon chicks who have been handled by humans.

  • Isn't that amazing that even birds know how to trick predators to help save their babies!
