Grand Island's airport, Arrasmith Field, was dedicated on Sept. 28, 1937. Construction on the airport began in 1936 and was completed with federal funds and Works Progress Administration funds. The only cost to the city was for the site.

During World War II, the field became Grand Island Army Air Field.

This is a home movie taken by my husband's grandfather, George Molstad.

  • Vsetera, You've made my day! I was hoping that somebody would enjoy this. Is your grandfather in the footage anywhere?

  • This is great! W.W. Arrasmith was my grandfather. Our family had no idea this footage existed. Thanks for posting it.

  • @VSETERA Oh wow! That's awesome! I put it up hoping that it would have meaning for someone out there. :)

  • Thank you for posting this wonderful footage. The biplanes flying in formation are Grumman F3 Gulfhawks. The little plane performing the "drunk routine" looks like a Piper Cub, possibly a J2 model. Of course the DC3 is the big one.

Please post all that you can from Grandpa's collection.
