Miracle on Ice Gold Medal Moment: 1980 Lake Placid

Voted the "Greatest Sports Moment of the 20th Century" by Sports Illustrated, the U.S. Hockey team shocked the world at the Lake Placid 1980 Olympic Winter Games when they defeated the Soviets. "Do you believe in miracles...YES!" shouted Sportscaster Al Michaels and the game infamously became known as the "Miracle on Ice". In this episode, Gold Medalist John Harrington, USA Hockey Executive Director Dave Ogrean, and Coaching Program Director of the 1980 U.S. Hockey team Lou Vairo, take viewers through a play by play of the path that lead the U.S. to Gold.

For a 12 year-old boy living in Philadelphia, 1980 was the year of years in sports. Phillies, Flyers, Sixers and Eagles all play in the Big game and the USA Hockey Team beats the commies on their way to the Gold Medal. These are the first olympic Games I really remember well. I have fleeting memories of Dorothy Hammel and Nadia but 1980 was the year. I didn't know it would never be better. Kids today can watch the movie, but you cannot re-create the cold war.

Dude . . . The Cold War. Then us boycotting the Soviet Games a few months later. Our hostages in Iran. Double digit flation and signing up for selective service, just incase you're needed to fight a war. I remember feeling like we were on he way out as a country. The big bully was finally getting his payback and things didn't look or feel very good. But that hockey game restorted a since of pride in our count ry that had gone away. I'll never forget that afternoon.

This 14 year old, redneck Cowboys fan never gave a damn about hockey...until this game. Indeed, it was a special moment in time! Four generations gathered around an old Curtis Mathes TV, knowing NOTHING about the game itself, only knowing it was US against THEM. I still cry when I see it! U-S-A, baby! Red, White, and Blue!!!
