Is it worth it to keep an old Betamax player around the house today? If you've got copies of Beverly Hills Cop, Risky Business AND Flashdance on Beta, the answer is obviously yes!
I prefer manual tracking actually! Great video by the way! Old VCRs are awesome man, way better than new cheaply made crap. I own a 1986 Sharp VC670-U and it died in 2008 but before then it ran really strong with great tracking and great sound for mono. SLP mono surprisingly can sound better than Hi Fi on that machine, which is rare on most VCRs.
I've seen silver-topped versions of this model in the UK (where it was called the VTC5000) but I so wish that this wooden version was sold here as well!
Got one at a flea market a few years ago. Now proudly on display in the new entertainment center, gotta get new belts though you can see and hear the tapes speeding up and slowing down.
We have a Sanyo (at least one) just like it. The last few times I used it, I had to try it a few times to loosen it up before it would work normally again. It's been quite a while since the last time it was used. I hope I'll try it out someday and see if it still works.
Every once in a while we said what Nick Dundee would say: "That's a noif." :-]
