How does a layman differentiate Dominican chant from Gregorian chant (that of the Solesmes school)? This is the first I've ever heard of Dominican chant. I must admit though, that there is something noticably different in this chant, though I'm not able to put my finger on it.
Many years ago Radio 3 broadcast a liturgical reconstruction of Machaut's Missa Magna for Christmas Day ~ 1360. The Laetabundus was sung as a Sequence leading up to the Gospel with vigorous ringing of bells - almost a competition between the choir and the bell ringers to see who could could drown out the other.
@ToryAnarchist It's just a variant of Gregorian.
If you Google Dominican liturgy blogspot and look for items about chant, you'll get more info.
