@SuperXavier30 I love and appreciate your take on this wonderful song?
I am still offended that Elton John sang it though. Lol
-
It's relevant as it was in Ireland today, black people only here one generation. Come see us n our gifts de monde

@eggplanthose Thank you, I think people forget the context of the period, people seem to think that things were also as they are now, When we listen to the music we have to consider the era and the situations which black people were living under, this was a time when people were trying to inspire our children. Frankly, many of them need to hear that they are capable and it was NEEDED.

@PRODIGALSUN2050 why?

@Gertiemarie50 we still need your permission to say we love what God has produced through us. Have mercy

@Gertiemarie50 ahh but white people can be as racist and separatist as they want and thats called "civilization" and we are all supposed to just accept that.
Fickle fickle egos some of you have.Greed of power, is more like it
-
@Gertiemarie50 I think maybe you've missed the whole context. At the time this was written, it was generally considered by many people that you could not be young, gifted and black. White folks had all of the power, all of the money etc. Young black people were made to feel inferior by their whole society. Now, we pretend we're past that because white folks only have most of the power, most of the money, etc. Racism must be fought and music is a powerful tool in that ongoing fight.

it means she was young and gifted, BUT black (so they kicked her many times for being black)

@Mileycyurs55 i think you're pretending to be 9 so that people will give you thumbs up on youtube. i reckon you're a 35 year old white man. my most sincere apologies if you are a young little black girl...

@Gertiemarie50 We are soooo tired of having to shut up about how we feel, because you are not comfortable. Where is your love? Is it only for us as long as we do not open up to you and show you how deeply we hurt? We are soo tired.
hey I 'm 9 and I think this song is very nice because it talks about young gifted and black. We should be proud of our colour because everyone' s colour is unique and it makes you special so be proud!

@Mileycyurs55 ,..Amazing comment! Thanks very much for such a refreshing take on this song. It’s all the more pertinent, as you my Friend are the future!
…“Everyone’s colour is unique and it makes you special so be proud!”... Love it!

I found her comment to whites quite rude. As a white person, I would never say that to anyone of any shade. Actually, if I ever chose to sing a song about being young, gifted and white, I would be considered a racist. Why can't people just become gifted and human at any age? I actually listened to this recording while doing a report on a playwright that I admired greatly. I won't make that mistake again.

@Gertiemarie50,On the contrary my Friend, I give Nina even more props for having the courage to speak her mind directly to her predomately white audience.
Also, if you chose to sing a song entitled “Young Gifted & White” I would not regard you as a racist, especially if you & I were marching & protesting on a daily basis whilst being arrested & beaten for the Human/Civil Rights of white people!
Might I suggest you embrace this song in the spirit it was intended,..the spirit of humanity!

@PRODIGALSUN2050 ,.That comment was really out of order!
Agree or disagree, Gertiemarie50 did not deserve such an ignorant response. Trust me I hear and feel where you’re coming from, over here in this so called “Great Britain” we are bombarded daily with “bias agendas”, but my friend we are grown folk and should be aware of the children who also tune into Nina and are often influenced by our comments.
Peace!
