Glass Harp - Look In The Sky (1970)

Recorded At Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studio

Glass Harp included singer/guitarist Phil Keaggy, bassist Dan Pecchio, and drummer John Sferra. Formed in 1969 in Youngstown, OH, the group — a free-form power trio in the tradition of Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and fellow Buckeyes the James Gang — quickly developed a strong local following, and in 1970 they signed to Decca to issue their self-titled debut LP. Synergy followed a year later, but after 1972's It Makes Me Glad Glass Harp disbanded; Keaggy went on to enjoy considerable success as a CCM solo act, while Pecchio later co-founded the Michael Stanley Band. Glass Harp's original lineup came together for a reunion concert in 1988.

Phil Keaggy (born March 23, 1951) is a guitarist and vocalist. He was raised in a small farmhouse in Hubbard, Ohio with nine brothers and sisters, and began playing guitar at age ten on a Sears Silvertone guitar. Keaggy's beginnings go back to the 60's and early 70's when he played in Glass Harp, a band that released several albums on the Decca label and was often seen on stage with bands like Yes, Traffic, Alice Cooper and Iron Butterfly. Glass Harp was a Youngstown, Ohio based power trio that formed in 1968 and consisted of guitarist Phil Keaggy, drummer John Sferra and bassist Daniel Pecchio. After the demise of Glass Harp, Keaggy began recording solo records and has done so ever since. Phil Keaggy is missing half of the middle finger on his right hand due to a childhood accident at age 4 involving a water pump. He is frequently listed as one of the top fingerstyle guitarists by Guitar Player Magazine readers' polls.

  • This shows you how great Cleveland area bands are. Go to any small bar on the weekend and someone is rocking out. Walking down the street and 3 Dog Night is jamming at a bar in Kent one night. Blossom Music Center where I graduated from and saw Cleveland Orchestra play the 1812 Overture and Pink Floyd. Cleveland Auditorium for Jethro Tull and Guess Who as opening band. Doors at Allen Theater for my first concert and on to the US Fest. Heaven to me all that great music and Rock and Roll Hall!OHIO

  • @oscarandbernie Cleveland was chosen by Bowie to kick off his first USA Ziggy tour back in Sept/October 1972. Reason also that he had a terrific fan base there even when he was quite obscure and wasn't selling albums.

  • i absolutely love the black and white picture you found of the glass harp/band sitting on a couch with the radio person/DJ holding a copy of the SYNERGY L.P.

  • As is the case bands like Glass Harp are highly collected in Japan. Have to thank the internet for people uploading some of the images.

  • the glass harp as a unit have to be one of the tightest 3 pieces ive heard, and it comes from sheer passion for music

  • @minutegongcoughs True, many bands were known to start off there. I saw Tull at Public Auditorium play Passion play and go on for over 3 hours. 3 days later in Pittsburgh, after an hour, they were ready to go. Show ended with Ian answering the phone...I was yelling "don't answer the phone!" He looked up and put down the phone. He played another 25 minutes and left the house in Pitt...had enough of the rookies yelling and not listening.

  • There is not one correct top ten guitarists list, in existence. Simply because,Phil Keaggy is on not one of them. Speaks volumes about how ill-informed these list makers are. This is Rock, at it's best!!!

  • @wax3bee7 The DJ is Larry Morrow from WIXY 1260

  • @socrates1818 I stand corrected, and I did think they was some connection between the two, being that both were similar Ohio-based, melodic power trios.

  • @notfragile33 Sorry James Gang influenced The Harp

  • This is one of the most beautiful rock songs I think I've ever heard. If only more Christian music could sound like Genesis! And the model for power trios like Rush and the James Gang--doing more with less!
