To fix FRAPS if it gives CODEC error in your video editor, your ANTI-VIRUS may be blocking proper install. For me, I disabled ALL SHIELDS in Avast Antivirus, uninstalled and re-installed FRAPS and then re-enabled ALL SHILEDS and it fixed the problem. Now FRAPS videos will open in Sony Vegas Pro and Camtasia Studio.

**The fastest way is to right click the avast icon, choose "avast shields control" and "disable for 10 minutes" (or 1 hour).**

If you do not have Avast, but still gives the same error with a CODEC, try disabling all "protection" of antivirus and anti-hijack etc. If you are paranoid (as I was) to do this, head over to http://www.VirusTotal.com and scan your FRAPS "setup.exe" by uploading it to their site, and it will check the hash and if it hasn't been scanned before, it will scan it with 42 anti-virus programs. My FRAPS installer had been scanned and say 0/42, meaning, no protection software flagged it as a possible threat.

I hope this helps, if it helped you or this didn't work for you, please leave a comment below so that other people can benefit.

Windows 7 64-bit.

*Before the fix:
* Sony Vegas Pro 8 and 11 (black video shown, but audio works)
* Camtasia Studio 7 ("no codec available to render this file")
* Windows Movie Maker 2007 (would not work at all)
* Handbrake (I could convert it to .M4V but that meant i had to convert it with other software to make it compatible with ye other software so that I could add post-commentary).

* and I tried other programs too, but now that I did this, they ALL work now.
Good luck.

GameBooster3 freeware may also help your FRAPS recording framerate. Also close all your internet browsers and everything you can, to gain more FPS.

  • @fabiwolf123 Yes, Black Video but the audio works, is the EXACT issue I had with Sony Vegas 8 and 11 and other software, while some other programs would not accept the video at all. I have verified just now that it loads both Video and Audio in Sony Vegas 8 and 11 with FRAPS version 3.4.7 build 13808 after using my solution with disabling Avast antivirus shields. If you have any antivirus running, you may try closing/disabling it for the "INSTALL" part of FRAPS, after it's installed, re-enable.

  • this work in vegas pro 9?, im have a problem I get the video in black and says missing codec fraps. thanks
