Just a newbie question, what kind of lyra are they playing? Are the three the same type? Curiosity, i have heard about a lot of kind of lyra (Estambul, back sea lyra,cretan..) but i can't recognize :)

Hello! The lyras we are playing are Cretan lyras with sympathetic strings. They are played just as a normal Cretan lyra (by the nails on the three playing strings) and the sympathetic strings are not played, but they resonate with the basic ones.

These lyras are an innovation of Ross Daly and they were first made 15 years ago. Now they are prety popular in Greece and there are many people in other countries that play them as well. Stelios Petrakis (one of the musicians playing in this video) is the maker of these three.

Is this one of Ross's compositions??

Yes, the first one (the slow one) is the end of a lament he wrote many years ago, the middle one is a 4/4 piece with no name, which is not included in any of his cds and the last one the 7/8 one is a mantilatos and it's included together with the lament in Kin Kin, a record he did in Australia.
