"The New" Encore Junction - 1999

"The New Encore" from 1999, a few months after the channel's first refresh in five years. The presentation has certainly become a little more conventional - the plugs for other premium channels (well, other than Starz) are gone, and hosted segments became more sporadic by this point. Yet this is still a very attractive redesign, with a nicely redesigned logo and all-gold motif.

Included are the "next" and "tonight" menus, a few promos, two idents, and the movie open. Interestingly there were more than five versions created of the movie open - to go along with the varied ident applications - but the gold one seen here was used the vast majority of the time. The whole look was designed by TZ Design - the same people did the white BBC America revamp of 2001.

All of the idents mention "The New Encore" as opposed to just the plain name. This was the name for the change in programming philosophy from 1998, when Encore began showing more recent movies. If I remember right, the "Great Movie Every Night... Guaranteed" slogan was an actual guarantee. Unsurprisingly, when they redid the voiceovers later in the year and changed the new Encore into just "Encore", they dropped the guarantee entirely.

4:05 I forgot about that peculiarity of late-90s/early-2000s Encore where the sound for the movie wouldn't kick in for about a second. What was with that, anyway?

The reason They Might've dropped the guarantee is because maybe they were running out of "Great Movies" to play or had a very little variety when they gone to recent movies?
