  • So interesting. I just came across your site. I was just like you. I had so many bananas ripening at the same time that I just threw them in the frig one day. I knew they advised against it because it darkens the skins, but I had to do something and didn't have time to peel them and freeze them. Like you, it worked. All bananas are gassed to ripen. so there is something to other things ripening when in contact with them. I put green avocados in the same bag as the bananas, sometimes.

  • just buy 5 or 6 at a time, anymore than that buy the green ones

  • Hmm.....I have heard that bananas give out gases and other byproducts while ripening, and hence should be kept separate outside in an open space. They say that it can quicken the ripening process of other products around it, which is why they advise against putting it in the fridge. What is your observation from your experiment? Did you find that other fruits ripen quickly when you put bananas inside the fridge, or did the other fruits just stay fresh like normal? Thanks for posting...

  • I discovered that you can stall the ripening process by cutting the stem off the banana when it is at the 'flavor zone' you prefer. (at room temp) You can leave it on the counter for many more days, and have it taste like it did when you cut the stem.

    Try it. It works GREAT!
