Demolition of the 62-room Apple Inn hotel in Nebraska City began this week
to make room for a new Walgreens store at the intersection of 11th Street and Fourth Corso.
Preliminary site plans call for the construction of a 73,000 square foot
store in the center of the block, with a drive-through lane going around the
building. There will be driveway access to both streets.
Brandt Construction of Lincoln began the demolition Monday with the
two-story hotel addition built by John and Janet Palmtag in 1986. The Fourth
Corso cottages, which were built in 1949, were demolished on Tuesday.
The excavator operator carefully picked at the walks with the claws of the
bucket, causing the limestone blocks to fall separately. The work was so
precise that the stone was pulled down without the breaking the glass in the
windows.
The pulverizing came soon after, however, as the bucket pushed over the wood
frame, wiring and plaster and pounded it into a mound of debris.
The site will be cleared and seeded in preparation for construction next
year.
The Palmtags¹ 7-M Corporation sold the Apple Inn and the city block to
Village Development Nebraska City for $1.2 million. Walgreens has a 75-year
lease on the premises beginning in August of 2009.
