The world's greatest concentration of ALS (Lou Gherig's Disease) has been found on the Pacific island of Guam. This discovery made by Dr. Leonard Kurland is shown here in this video.
ALS exists. Nerve cells (neurons) waste away or die & can no longer send messages to muscles, leading to muscle weakening, twitching & an inability to move the arms, legs & body. When the muscles in the chest area stop working, it becomes hard or impossible to breathe on one's own.
ALS affects approximately 5 out of every 100,000 people worldwide.
There is no known cure for ALS, but only HOPE that a cure is found.
C'mon, how old is this video? Looks like it's from the 50's, maybe even earlier. Especially since Dr. Kurland retired from (US) public health service in 1964. There's no severe rampant ALS outbreak on Guam anymore. There's a brown tree snake problem problem though. Show a video of that!!
My father passed away with ALS. He never ate Fruit Bat! He blamed his disease on the pre/post WWII US military's years of spraying our island with DDT to protect their military families from malaria and/or other "local diseases". These poisonous events not only fatally attacked our people but destroyed our bird population.
radiation is bad..but the thing is, there is hope..with ALS there is no known cure. You see your loved ones weaken before you..slowly deteriorate before you..slowly die..there is no choice in the matter.

I have heard that ALS on Guam was linked to consumption of the Fruit Bat. Now that the diet on Guam has changed so has the rate of ALS.
