  • Dear Sir Help !! I overwinterised my banana tree in october and it sprouted too soon ( in december about 24 inches) so I went and cut the sprout.. DOYOU THINK IT WILL SPROUT AGAIN FOR SUMMER?? thanks for the advice :(

  • @juillet64 Extension horticulturist Greg Stack responds: "When overwintering bananas they often will start to sprout too early for them to be placed outdoors in cold areas. Cutting them back will not harm them because the growing point is actually slightly below the soil line so a new shoot will emerge. If possible, you might want to try and keep the plant a little cooler 45-50 degrees to slow it down some and perhaps a little drier also."

  • thanks so much I just could'nt bring myself to throw out my banana tree ! Now it's sitting in the basement in the dark ... Can't wait till spring! :-)

  • Yeah.. I want to save my plant because it finally has some size...

    So I'll cut it down..

    I'm thinking no...

  • Excellent instructional video-thanks!

  • Pretty good video. If you want to get bananas do not cut them down, the banana in this video is an ornamental so it dosent really matter. Also you can leave some types of bananas in the ground over the winter, like M. Basjoo.

    Again, pretty good video :)
