Esperanza Spalding is an American jazz bassist and singer. Spalding had intended to play cello but discovered the bass during a one year stint at age 14 at the prestigious performing arts high school, The Northwest Academy, to which she had won a scholarship. Spalding left high school at 16 and after completing her GED enrolled on a music scholarship in the music program at Portland State University, where she remembers being "the youngest bass player in the program."

Although she lacked the training of her fellow students, she feels that her teachers nevertheless recognized her talent and she decided to instead apply to Berklee College of Music on the encouragement of her bass teacher and did well enough in her audition to receive a full scholarship.

Almost immediately after graduation from college, in 2005, Spalding was hired by Berklee College of Music, becoming one of the youngest professors in the institution's history.

In this video, she performs "I Know You Know" before a live audience at the Jimmy Kimmel Show.

  • she won the grammy beating bieber

there is hope in this world

  • @jasmine4910 Eh, when record of the year goes to Lady Antebellum and Album of the Year to Arcade Fire you know that saccharine bubble-gum pop hasn’t got a snowball’s chance in hell –no matter how many rabid tweens are behind his cause. It seems that the Grammys were shooting for musical credibility this year.

  • Amazing, just amazing, pure talent

  • Love her. Amazing talent

  • @gospelkeys07: Sorry - I should've been more clear. I know the difference between a bass guitar and an upright bass (I play both). I was curious to know if anyone knew the make/model of the bass guitar she's playing.

  • Her talent leaves me speechless. Anyone know what kind of bass she's playing? I've never seen one like that?

  • ESPERANZA FOR JAZZ!

  • @rt67ui "Esperanza" means "hope" in spanish jajajaja so, yeah, in fact there is "esperanza" in this world :)

  • @hellokittycutie2003 if you look like her we should hook up and make babies

  • I always hear this lovely song on the jazz station down here in Atlanta. Such an amazingly talented and BEAUTIFUL woman. Classy, rocks her natural hair, and a jazz musician. I'm 22, with natural hair, and grew up on jazz...she's such an inspiration!

  • I almost had a goddamn heart attack....

I was getting dressed and realized that her voice is EXACTLY what that of a female Stevie Wonder would be. She SINGS like him....It's WONDERFUL!!!!

Guess Mr. Wonder must have a long lost daughter!

  • Fuck Josh. Esperanza should be getting interviewed!
