"While No One Watches" by Brian Maki of Marquette, Michigan. All music credit to Alan Silvestri.

While No One Watches

I had always tried in my life
To be the best I could be
At everything possible
Whether it by sport or job
I tried and tried with all my effort
Not everyone is so driven
To cast a stone in the water
And watch what happens
It may have been a curious mind
That kept a child like me
Reaching for the stars
Trying to be a champion
When no one else was around
When others had closed their doors
To watch me take my victory lap
When only a neighborhood eye
Watched my special moment
How many times I have lived
A moment where I had won
A moment when I had achieved
A moment that defined me.

I had always tried in my life
To be the best I could be
And I don't think I ever failed
For it was for those who never tried
Are the ones who never stood tall
Whether for fact or fiction
Knew in their hearts they won
It was in the thought of it all
That I found the way to the gold
The very meaning is true to my heart
Like every effort it took to get there
Had been worth every ounce of sweat
And I should never look down upon
Even the smallest victories gained
Has given me the desire to do
So much more beyond myself
For it is in the giving of one's self
That I think makes the difference
Between a winner and a loser
Who never stops trying
While no one watches.

  • Brother, you were only 11 when I left for the military. I’ve been gone 28 years. I missed so many things; I wasn’t there to see you drive a car, for your first date, or when father died. I was absent for so many things, even your wedding. I am sorry. Part of my sacrifice was time I should have spent with you. Only the family of a soldier knows the emptiness left behind when they go. And though I wasn’t always watching, you were always in my heart. I am proud of you and I love you. Allen
