Certain mistakes are covered up by distortion (like clipped notes or uneven dynamics) while others are covered up by playing with a clean tone (like extra strings ringing out, and "straying notes" like israeliguitar mentioned). Practicing a lick both clean and with distortion will allow you to see "both sides," if you will, of the aspects of your playing.

Some good advice here. The simple stuff like removing the reverb/compression is pretty handy. That guitar is really nice -- what is it?
