@HarduntheRanger They can, but all the beaming itself is done in the transorter room, so they would have to do two beamings in one, wich would mean it wastes twice as much energy. It would be even less energy if they would use a shuttle every time, but that takes to much time.

This reminds me of those TV writers like Steve Moffat and Russell T Davies who insist they don't put any technobabble in their scifi shows. They seem to miss the bloody point that science fiction without it is a lot like this sketch. Only not intentionally.
