  • A cable tool drilling rig was an iron bit that was dropped through the bore hole onto rock or soil to break it up. Another tool had a flap valve and the material would be extracted up hole by hand from time to time. The first drilled oil wells were made this way. This is likley the steam engine used to lift the bit and drop it.
