Are there any organic alternative to using lye when making soap?

Lye is organic :)

But if you want to make lye yourself... you have to burn wood or herbs.. then run water through it and collect the water. This will almost always give you a base that produces liquid soap though.

But water and ashes is the way to go to make it yourself
