Linux is a OS it was created by a group of computer hackers and was used for that purpose untill people adepted it for use on servers

I assume you mean that it should say GNU/Linux. Most folks just abbreviate it to Linux and it is most definitely an Operating System (OS). It manages computer resources, provides a user interface, and launches applications.
