@primitika I'm no expert in this area, I can probably learn a ton from you, you sound like you know your stuff! Thanks for pointing that out and making me clarify what I said.

@primitika music to NOLA,and alot of the people that traditionally played it and innovated the style were somewhat untrained in drumming. But the same is true for the pioneers of the samba, and reggae, etc. You can even check out pictures in Herlin Riley's book which show several drummers holding sticks incorrectly. Again, this isn't a negative connotation, just a fact. I by no means meant all NOLA drummers were unschooled, but alot of the innovators of this parade style were.

@primitika I made it seem that way.Sorry for that.Fact of the matter, second line is a street beat and some of the best and most authentic players that you'll see are the unschooled ones.I have MAD respect for Herlin Riley (own one of his books). And you're correct, NOLA was the birthplace of what is now jazz.I mean, come on, Baby Dodds is credited with coming up with the modern jazz ride pattern! My point, and you're right, I should have made it clearer, was that second line is an indigenous

@primitika Sorry, I could have worded that a bit clearer. You're absolutely correct on Baby Dodds and Herlin Riley...as well as Johnny Vidakovich, Earl Palmer, Russell Batiste, Zigaboo...the list could go on. What I was referencing were the parade bands, the types that originated around the Treme area in NOLA,which gave birth to Excelsior,Olympia, etc...and some of the ones you still see today playing the streets.Alot of these bands have drummers that are unschooled, and that's not a bad thing
This is more difficult than you make it look. Thanks for the info..

@MrBustemup That's what I love about this music...it sounds so simple and groovy but is really pretty challenging.
