@jamesrussell000 Depends on the instructor really doesn't it? I've had great teachers and mediocre ones. I notice the great ones treat every student a little differently. with some they're quite rough...with others not so hard. I always preferred the mutual respect model myself. Peace.

@TrippyTheShroom You're exactly right! When I was jumped by several people, (been several times) I found myself street brawling. I picked up a broom, broke the end off, & used it as a bo staff. I used my radio, took it by the antennae & swung it 2 break a man's jaw. I threw a chair at the group & tackled the closest. Training went right out the window! lol

Even as a student of this, I still hafta say that it's almost an insult that after the instructor places you on the ground, he simply walks away instead of helping the student up. It's a very cold art. You're taught to throw your fellow students to the ground, repeatedly, & never help them up again because technically, they represent the enemy. I always respected the students immensely.

@jeffchen Lol, you don't live in America do you? Ya, our court system is horrible. I defended myself and one of the thug took me to court because I apparently broke 2 of his fingers and put a hairline fracture on his nose. Go figure...luckily I didn't get in trouble, but the judge told me that If I ever get into another confrontation like this, I have to warn the aggressor that I know various styles of martial arts, and will use them against him if need be. Stupid, but better than Jail lol.

@TrippyTheShroom you defend yourself and still can be sued?!.. your country's judicial system sometimes baffles me!

@jeffchen Lol, when i went against those 4 guys, 90% of every technique I had learned before hand was completely pointless for me. I actually did one or two of the techniques that the instructor in this video series used. The good thing about Aikido is that it is meant to be gentle with your opponent, but at the same time be effective enough to be a great martial art. Because, believe it or not, one of those thugs sued me... I didnt get in trouble whatsoever beacuse no permanent damage was done.

@jeffchen I'm sorry, i didnt mean to insult or anything like that. I just meant that in most cases in a street fight you're possibly facing multiple people...just like in any martial arts, you have to sacrifice most of your knowledge when facing multiple opponents. I live in New York City and last christmas while walking to my house I got jumped by 4 street thugs. When your training in a Dojo or a place of practice, the though of facing multiple opponents seems easy...real life is different

@TrippyTheShroom trippy mushroom I DISAGREE with your statement that its "completely pointless" in a street
fight.... the truth is .. MOST OF IT IS USELESS in a street fight.. only the most basic and simple of moves in bjj i personally have used to save my life... the double leg and throw, knee on belly... and the guilloutine thats about it . everything else commits too much for u to get away ,

@TrippyTheShroom yeah... its evolved to a point for me that i do it for myself, because i love it , because i feel im a better person through its training.,... all the "this versus that.". effective in a street fight thing has kinda become irrelevant to me..

@jeffchen On the other hand...BJJ in, oh say, UFC or against one opponent is great. I love how effective BJJ is against one opponent...but when there's more than one opponent, i find it bad.
I took a BJJ class for 2 years and I've been taking Aikido classes for over 10. Both are very effective within their own rights. No martial art is more effective than others, just the practitioner.
Cheers!
