Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father) said: Do not sit with the people of ahwaa (lowly desire), verily your sitting with them causes heart disease!
Debating, arguing and disputing are innovations, which throw doubt into the heart, even if the person reaches the truth and the sunnah. ( Al-Barbahaaree Creed point 12, page 31)
Similarly Ahlus-Sunnah walJama'a, forbid indulging in futile argumentation and disputes in deen and the origin for this is in the warning of the prophet salallaahu alahi wa sallam) concerning this matter. The evidence is his saying (in Bukhari and in Muslim):
"Recite and study the Quraan as long as you agree about its understanding and interpretation, but if you have any difference of opinion regarding its interpretation and meaning then you should stop reciting it for the time being."
And in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad and in the Sunan of Ibn Majah, the report who's origin is in Saheeh Muslim from the hadeeth of Abdullah bin Amr, that the prophet salallaahu alayhi wa sallam one day came out and they were disputing regarding the predecree and the prophet salallaahu alayhi wa sallam was so angry and he said, Is this what you have been commanded, or were you created for this? You strike the parts of the Qur'aan against other parts This is what brought destruction of nations before you.
Even the reports came to verify that futile argumentation is a form of punishment from Allaah in this Ummah. In the Sunan of At-Tirmidhi, and he said it is good report, and that from Ibn Majah, from the hadeeth of Abi Umaamah, may Allaah be pleased with him, that the prophet salah allaahu alayhi wasallam said:
"No people will be misguided after receiving guidance except if they engage in futile argumentation."
Then the prophet sallalahu alayhi wa sallam recited the verse from Surah az-Zukhruf (43:58):
"They quoted not the above example except for argument. Nay! But they are a quarrelsome people."
Imam Ahmed, the Imam of Ahlus-Sunnaah said:
The basic foundations of Sunnah with us is, to hold firm to that which the companions of the messenger were upon and to follow them on that, and to abandon innovations, and every innovation is a misguidance, and to abandon disputes, and to abandon the sitting with the people of desires, and to abandon argumentation and disputes in deen.
All what you have heard concerning argumentation applies to the futile argumentation or arguing the truth when it is evident and clear, or arguing without knowledge or arguing that which is concerning the verses which are not entirely clear, or to argue having an ill intention.
However argument to make the truth clear and
prevailing offered by a scholar or a person of knowledge who has good intention and abiding by the etiquettes, rather this is praise worthy, Allaah says in surah An-Nahl, Surah 16, verse 125:
"Invite {mankind, O Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam} to the Way of your Lord with wisdom {i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Quraan} and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better."
