I was 8 & grow'g in NY @ the time of the attack that inspired Phil. 3/13/64, shortly after 3 am, Kitty Genovese returnd home & was attacked--*3X*-- w/in view of *38* neighbors--*none* called the PD. By the time I got to college, psych was teach'g, the "Genovese Syndrome." (Fear of &/or not wanting "involvement") I'd found this vid offensive, at first. Phil's orig was chilling, NOT comic, BUT--coz this is the "Yes we CAN" era, I'll trust Youth to make it the "Yes, We *Will* Era," OK?

@silverbonn The Genovese incident precipitated a large body of reseasch in Social Psychology studying altruism, or helping behavior.

The key finding, replicated over and over, in context after context, was that people in crowds, or groups, are much less likely to help than if the same need for help were presented to an individual, or a couple of people, or a small group.

As the size of the group who observes the need for help goes up, apparently people think, "Someone else will provide it."

"Picking nits"?? Seriously? You are accusing 38 people of nearly criminal negligence. The actual FACTS in the case show that most of those people DID NOT HEAR KITTY BECAUSE THEIR WINDOWS WERE CLOSED AND THE TV WAS ON. Of the few who did hear, MOST DID NOT REALIZE IT WAS A CRY FOR HELP. The two who did recognize the cry called the cops.

@trooface According to CNN, "*dozens*" either saw or "WITH IN VIEW" of Kitty's cries.Other say *38+/-* heard/saw (NY tenements hav bak alley vws, btw.) While I said "none called," I meant none ACTED SOON ENUFF TO SAVE HER.(Those who ALLOWED 4 inteviews admitted assuming "someone else" had probly called already, to ease their consciences.)

Keep pickn;' those nits~. Doesn't change the facts: A woman died needlessly--coz ppl passd the buck. Same issue as DV. "Pretend what u *KNO* is happnin' aint!

@silverbonn Kitty Genovese was not killed within view of anybody. She was killed in a back alley. Only a dozen of those neighbours actually heard anything. Most thought it was a lovers quarrel or something similar. Only two realized an attack was occurring and both called the cops - who were slow to arrive.
