Massimo Piguicci debates Robert J Allen on "Has Mankined Evolved From Other Species?"

____________________________________________________________
Pigliucci was born in Monrovia, Liberia, although he was raised in Rome, Italy. He has a doctorate in genetics from the University of Ferrara, Italy, a Ph.D. in botany from the University of Connecticut, and a Ph.D. in philosophy of science from the University of Tennessee. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry.

Pigliucci was formerly a professor of ecology and evolution at Stony Brook University. His research focused on phenotypic plasticity, genotype-environment interactions, natural selection, and the constraints imposed on natural selection by the genetic and developmental makeup of organisms.

Early in his career, he received the prestigious Theodosius Dobzhansky Prize from the Society for the Study of Evolution[8]. As a philosopher, Pigliucci is interested in the structure and foundations of evolutionary theory, the relationship between science and philosophy, and the relationship between science and religion.

Pigliucci writes regularly for Skeptical Inquirer on topics such as climate change denial. Has also written for Philosophy Now and maintains a blog called "Rationally Speaking." He has debated "deniers of evolution" (young-earth creationists and intelligent design proponents), including young earth creationists Duane Gish and Kent Hovind and intelligent design proponents William Dembski and Jonathan Wells, on many occasions.

Pigliucci is an atheist, and while he considers atheism a perfectly respectable metaphysical position, he believes that science does not necessarily demand atheism, because of the distinction between methodological and philosophical naturalism and the distinction between matters of fact and value judgments. He believes that many scientists and science educators fail to appreciate these differences.

Pigliucci serves on the board of NYC Skeptics and on the advisory board of the Secular Coalition for America. He also co-hosts its official podcast: Rationally Speaking, with Julia Galef.

Mr. Robert J. Allen received a Master of Science in Education degree in Combined Sciences in 1980 from William Carey College. He retired from the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs, MS, in 1999, after 20 years of Electron Microscopy research on shellfish of the Gulf of Mexico and optical microscopy of cancer in aquatic fish. He now works part time supporting the central Mississippi catfish farming industry at the Fish Diagnostics Laboratory at the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine.

Mr. Allen is a former Evolutionist, and taught Evolution while a public school Biology and General Science teacher at the Junior High School level in Illinois. He became a Christian in 1983 at the age of 26 after hearing Science information he had not received as a Biology major in his undergraduate education at Eastern Illinois University. After experiencing such a huge paradigm shift in his world view, first from Evolutionist to Creationist, and then from Atheist/Agnostic to Christian, he began to study all aspects of the origins issue. Shortly after that, he began lecturing widely throughout the US on the Creation/Evolution controversy, and on Atheism. He has debated Evolutionists and Atheists on stage and on the radio, has been the featured speaker on national radio, and is currently writing a book tentatively entitled, "Refuting Claims and Arguments of the Atheism Myth."

  • So....sorry but....Pigliucci is a little dumb to be debating a guy like this--he's not even a PASSABLE creationist.

....but I think that biologists shouldn't be debating ANY creationists.

  • The Plastic Man. Stacey Augmon.

  • Robert just hears one thing, gets out a talking point, then is called out on it because the talking point and nothing to do with what they're talking about

  • Believe it or not, Allen is one of the more knowledgeable creationists.

  • Haha, this interview is like German Shepherd vs. Pug.

  • When we take into account indels and differential in alignable sequences, the differential between human and chimps is 70%, yet we share 99% percent of our genes with mice. I dont know Massimo, maybe you better rethink this one as to who the closest relative is.

"A genome-wide comparison of recent chimpanzee and human segmental duplications". Nature 437 (1 September 2005)

    Nature december 2002

  • What a jack ass , he already defines evolution in a half ass moronic way to suit himself!

  • Funny how Allen accepts historical data when it seems to confirm what he already wanted to believe.
