A southern California man is recovering after officers say he fell asleep at the wheel of his U-Haul truck and crashed while driving on Highway 101.
That happened at about 9:00a.m. Wednesday in the northbound lanes of the highway, near Arroyo Grande. Investigators say the driver was part of a caravan of U-Hauls traveling from Van Nuys to Atascadero, when the man fell asleep at the wheel and ran off the road and landed in a culvert. "Fortunately for everyone involved, the driver, even with how wrecked the truck is, the driver sustained only moderate injuries, and is talking, conscious, and it's a St. Patricks Day miracle crash," said Andrew Kenny of the California Highway Patrol.
The driver was taken to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital for treatment, but officers say this crash could have been much worse. "Very, very easily could have been a fatal," said Kenny.
The CHP reminds drivers to be careful if you're driving and being to feel tired. Kenny recommends pulling over. "If you feel drowsy no matter who you are or what you're doing, pull over," Kenny suggests. "Pull over, get out of the vehicle, walk around, take some deep breaths. Get a Starbucks, get a coffee you know get some water and refresh yourself before you go on."
I almost died. There's nothing funny about that.
