Shah's Exile Begins In Egypt

The Shah of Iran, shattered by months of near-revolution and bloodshed in the streets of his country's cities and towns, left Teheran on Tuesday (16 January) and later arrived in Egypt as the guest of President Anwar Sadat. SYNOPSIS: The Shah and Empress Farah were not at Aswan by President Sadat and his wife Jihan. The Egyptian Vice President, Hosni Mubarak and several Cabinet Ministers including Acting Foreign Minister Boutros Ghali were among the welcoming dignitaries. Aswan was the location of the Shah's last visit, when he had talks with President Sadat on the Middle East situation. Looking tired, the Shah received a full ceremonial welcome, including a traditional twenty-one gun salute, after which he reviewed the one-hundred and-one man guard of honour with President Sadat. The Shah and the Egyptian President developed a strong personal friendship at the Islamic Summit in Morocco in 1969, which discussed what action the Islamic world could take against Israel following a fire in the Al-??? Mosque in East Jerusalem. Relations between Egypt and Iran were troubled under the late President Nasser of Egypt, but steadily improved after President Sadat succeeded him. President Sadat said this visit would confirm the Egyptian people's appreciation for the Shah's support of Egypt. Now, the man who has ruled Iran for thirty-eight years and who represents the oldest monarchy in he world, appears to be heading for exile, possibly in the United States. His ideals were based on technological growth. Those against him were more concerned with human and religious values.

Sadat did the right thing in harbouring the Shah. It was a sign of gratitude from Sadat to the Shah who helped Egypt with the supplies of Fuel during the 1973 war against Israel at a time when Egypt was in desperate need of it to survive the war and record a victory in the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
