We rode the bikes through the fog on Sunday for the 9:12am launch on October 18, 2009. This was for a military weather satellite.

Overall, the coast was socked in. This was along Hwy 1 just west of the 101 when we realized that the launch would not be visible in Lompoc.

  • (continued from above) ... in-flight trajectory adjustments, and especially the staging. Seeing the two stap-on boosters falling down and away arching back to earth, then the upper staging... I couldn't believe how low of an angle the rocket's trajectory was arching horizontally low and far across the horizon. From Lompoc all we see is the vehicle going up, angling off, some staging, but eventually just watching the exhaust flame grow smaller until gone. Thanks for the different angle...!

  • What was your location, hwy 1 between Lompoc and Gaviota Pass?

    It is very intersting for me to view a launch, or video of a launch, at locations farther away from the actual launch site than Lompoc. The first time I had viewed a launch outside Lompoc was in from Goleta in 2003. The rocket was the Titan IV. It was quite spectacular viewing and quite exciting personally for I had come to take for granted 40 years of launches in Lompoc. It was fascinating to have a better view of the (continued)
