World Environment Day: The history of Green Bans and the beginnings of the Environmental movement - Davie Thomason
When: 7 June 2011 - 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Location: Morrow Theatre (Above Geelong Library)
Geelong Regional Library Corporation invites you to attend a educational lecture about the history of Green Bans in Australia. June the 14th 2011 marks the 40th anniversary of the first Green Ban to save Kelly's Bush in the Sydney suburb of Hunter's Hill. The fight to save this undeveloped bushland was fought by a residents' group and the Builder's Labourers Federation, (New South Wales branch). Jack Mundey was the leader of the BLF during this turbulent time, and Davie Thomason was his apprentice.
The famous Green Bans, enabled many successful campaigns to protect the built and natural environment of Sydney, from excessive and inappropriate development. The campaigns fought were sometimes fierce, leading to bloodshed and even an alleged kidnapping and murder.
"Many see the Green Bans as the real beginnings of the conservation movement. They also provided the inspiration for the formation of the original Germany's Green Party, now the biggest Green political party in the World" Davie Thomason
DAVIE THOMASON came to Australia in 1970 when he jumped ship. He became one of the youngest organisers for the BLF union in the early 1970's and participated in many Green Ban campaigns. He has since participated in many other campaigns and continues to be an environmentalist and activist.
