It seems to me that Vai is always trying to be FZ, Vai's music is mathematically clever but it just hasn't got the depth or soul of FZ. I don't think FZ would have liked this because in reality it's just not that good, It's forced.
The only times Vai has really caught my ear is when he plays the music of Zappa.
