I've built a fully functional Podcast Player in the 3D virtual world of Second Life. It allows the owner to subscribe to most any audio or video podcasts and view them on their Second Life parcel. Now SL residents can watch or listen to Diggnation, TWiT, SecondCast and all their other favorite podcasts from inside SL. It can store up to 30 podcasts at a time and will automatically check for new episodes four times a day!

  • Ok so Is the player for sale? L$ I presume?

  • Yes. You can purchase it from my new store, "Hare-Brained Technologies" (Belleville - 46,246,140) - http://tinyurl.com/jrx5m

  • Right that's what I'm saying, viewed AS they download. What happens if I zone into an area that has a video playing in the middle of the file? Surely I can't cache it myself fast enough to get caught up to what everyone else is watching? How is that addressed?

  • You would see the media from the beginning and not be in sync with any pre-existing users. I tinkered with trying buffering/fastforwarding playback for new arrivals but it wasn't reliable. If multiple people are on the parcel when the owner presses "Play", the playback starts for all of them simultaniously, though.

  • Well yeah, I know what a podcast is, I watch Crankygeeks, Digital Life, and Diggnation religiously. But podcasts generally aren't streaming. The whole file needs to be downloaded and then viewed locally. The first two I mentioned though do stream from their site, but only the most recent two episodes. Are you tapping into that?

  • No streaming server is used. As long as the podcasts use MP3, MPEG-4, or hinted MOVs (most all do to be compatible with iPods) then their episodes can be viewed as they download in SL's embedded Quicktime player.
