Churchill was the architect of the Italian campaign - he obviously hadn't learned much from Gallipoli! Opening up another front also went against sound military practice. Hitler did the same thing in Russia. By the way, the level of stupidity and bigotry displayed in some of the comments does nothing to honour the memories of the men who fought in this campaign. 55,000 allied casualties, 20,000 German casualties. The Anzio battle racked the total allied count up to 105,000.

It was nice to hear the english and german soldiers talk about the battle, they are the true historians! – they wrote history.

I’m equally pleased it was a none “PC” version with that mandatory political agenda we’ve all become familiar with, first time I’ve ever come across such a documentary, this was like a breath of fresh air.

Polish,English,Moroccans,Ameri­cans,Indians and soldiers of New Zealand and France against Deutsche paratroopers.Complete Allied air superiority, lots of artillery and limitless supplies and still they sucked.And all this when the bulk of the German army was fighting in the East...What a crappy coalition.My respect to the German paratroopers. May they rest in peace.
