The sounds of the legendary Bode Vocoder,, Related to the Moog Vocoder,, check out the beautiful melodic sounds that it produces,, One of the top 3 Analog vocoders, right up there with EMS and Sennheiser

  • this may have already been answered or not, but did you just speak the lines in this vid or did you sing them in key? if not, would singing be more harmonic with the vocoder effect compared to talking (like in the case of a talk box) or no?

  • @RockaRollaZombie With vocoders,, you don't necessarily have to "sing" in chord with the carrier/synth. However if your own voice is WAY out of tune by lets say an octave or two,, you would notice it,, just speaking in a monotone voice is ok if you speak into most vocoders

  • @AlainHubert The best use of the Sennheiser is on Mr. Neil Young's 'Trans' album followed by Mr. Herbie Hancock's use of it.

  • @intromix Okay, that answers my question. It must have been one of the presets of the Polymoog that had some slight vibrato that I heard (not in the video but on the CD version of that song). Thanks. I know one thing, I heard (and used) a few vocoders (all digital) from Korg MS2000(16 bands), Novation Nova(40 bands), Alesis Ion (40 bands), and only one came close to a Bode 7702. The Nova. It recreated the sibilance pass-thru better than others. But not as good as the Bode (or Moog).

  • @AlainHubert Hmmm, not quite sure what you mean, in Giorgio's video? Give me a time frame. If the carrier has that vibrato sound, thats why any vocoder would,, If the carrier is just a straight sawtooth pulse with no vibrato, thats how the vocoding will sound.

  • @intromix You're right. Giorgio did use the Moog clone of a Bode 7702. And in that video he used a Polymoog synthesizer as carrier.

Can you tell me if the "warbly" semi-vibrato sound produced by the vocoder on sustained notes the result of the carrier sound from the synth or is it a result of the analog vocoding ?

  • @AlainHubert I've seen that one before, I like it. Actually he used the Moog Vocoder. I really want to get my hands on a Syntovox. I was thinking of a project, like making a video of the top 4 analog Vocoders in history and up there in price, and doing sound on them....1) EMS 2) Sennheiser 3) Moog/Bode 4) Synton. Soundwise, EMS and Bode I think are the best in clarity and richness. I dont see whats so great about the Sennheiser, I use to own it and thought it was no big deal so I sold it.

  • @intromix yeah, I've seen it too.

Have you seen the video promo with Giorgio Moroder from 1979 ? He used a Bode 7702 vocoder throughout his album E=MC2.

Key in "Giorgio Moroder Promo Video" and watch at around 1:08 into the video...

  • @AlainHubert Thanks,, I used an Oberheim OB8 for the sound input. But there are way better carriers to use for better sounds, in fact, this is not the best use of the Bode (I was just learning how to use it) The better video is this one (key in "bode vox intro") you'll see what I mean

  • One question: what was the synthesizer used as a carrier ?

    Great demo !
