97 Ebonite Challenge Match 2 Smith vs Stayrook Part 1

Norm Duke is back. The 1994 IOF/PBA Player of the Year led off the Fall Tour by capturing the Ebonite Challenge at Bradley Bowl.

Duke, Clermont, Fla., defeated tournament leader Pete Weber, 236-194, for his 13th career win and $21,000. Even in defeat, Weber became just the second player (Walter Ray Williams Jr.) in PBA history to surpass the $2 million mark in career earnings.

For Duke, his second win of the year came after a winless 1996 campaign.

"I've been much better this year after a real hum-drum year in 1996," said Duke.

The title match was close through five frames as both players stayed clean and Duke led by 10. Weber made the only mistake of the match in frame six as he missed the 7-pin to the right on a spare attempt. Duke took advantage with five consecutive strikes to seal the win.

"I just whiffed it," said Weber. "No excuses, just flat out missed it."

"Pete's one of the greatest spare shooters ever," said Duke. "You certainly never expect him to miss a single-pin and you better make sure you take advantage of it when it does happen."
