Cycling in Autumn often means cycling in the dark and in wet conditions. In the Netherlands the protected bike ways (separated cycle paths) prove usefull also under these circumstances. The paths are well lit and being away from motorised traffic is even more important when the weather is bad.
This video was recorded around 22.00 hrs (or 10 pm) in 's-Hertogenbosch (a.k.a. Den Bosch) in the Netherlands after a night of heavy rain.

  • Nice video, as usual.

What I think is the most surprising is... what you don't see: i.e. there's virtually no car parking along the roads in the video!

That does make cycling facilities, be it path or lane, much more easier to build and more pleasant to ride in :-)

  • @dalbani that is Dutch planning: on urban distributer roads there cannot be parking. That would be too dangerous on a through street. Parking would be on a service road if there were houses on a road like this, but mostly those roads are kept free of houses. Who wants to live on a busy road anyway?

  • Hi Mark, I recently wrote a letter to local paper about having more pedestrian space and shared zones in our city centre, one reply to my letter was that is fine if you can walk and cycle, but what about people with walking disabilities, they need to use there cars or be dropped off close to shops. How does it work with people with disabilities in the Netherlands ,are there many on motorized scooters for example?

  • @mjmktr69 residents and taxis may enter the car free zone. The barrier at 4:42 is moveable. If you have a keycard to operate the barriers they will sink in the ground and you can pass. There are also always parking places for handicapped in or very near such areas. Buses do usually enter the areas too. And yes there are also huge numbers of people in motorized scooters. It really is no issue.

  • fortunately cyling is not allowed in UK at night

  • @ekcoscott I think they are. As long as it gives white or yellow light, and isn't blinding, it should be alright.

  • Just out of interestare are carbide bicycle lamps legal in the Netherlands i have had no trouble from the police in Northern Ireland where i live but different country differnt laws.

  • road look sweet man

  • Leuk gedaan, het is natuurlijk wel een dooie boel in de stad na 1800 uur, helemaal met dit pokkeweer van de laatste dagen.

  • If only conditions for cycling in the UK were like that! Peaceful, safe and separated from traffic.

  • no parked cars blocking the way in the city centre - astounding!

  • Sorry, Mark. I meant to add comments to that clip I sent!

Love your films as always. Carefully crafted and well narrated. I look forward to new ones from our cycling backwater here in Australia.
