Update 21st September 2009: Ray Comfort has decided to modify his introduction to his planned distribution of "On the Origin of Species...". Full text from his blog:
"It's now heading for 100 universities and 100,000 copies, and it will be the entire book (every jot and tittle). How wonderful that 100,000 students will get a complete copy of Origin of Species with a full color cover. The publication will have a total of 304 pages.

Thanks to advice from Atheists and others, the new Introduction will address Darwin's "racism"--and how he was truly a gentle-man who was admantly against slavery.

And it will qualify his apparant denegration of women. Besides, the moral character of Charles Darwin is irrelevant to the Theory of Evolution, just as the Theory of Relativity should stand on its own merits, and not on the morality of Albert Einstein.

I will also make it clear that Hitler abused his theory, and is also irrelevant to whether or not it's true.

I want this Introduction to be fair-minded, free from prejudice against Darwin, no straw men or quote-mining. I'm sure many of you won't believe that, but it's the truth."

This is a win of sorts and it's all down to the people who take a stand against dishonest tactics, whatever their motives.

On Thursday November 19, 2009, Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort (the banana guy) will be distributing 50,000 copies of Charles Darwin's 'Origin of Species' at universities across America to students for free. Each copy will have a 50 page intro about how evolution has never been proven and how Darwin helped inspire the Holocaust!

A measured response to this misinformation tactic is called for, however I believe the suggested response from The Richar Dawkins foundation and Pharyngula ("We can amass as many of these books as possible, remove the 50 page intro, and then donate perfectly good copies of 'Origin of Species' to schools, libraries, and Goodwill. ") will lead to charges of censorship and give the impression that evolution proponents have something to fear. I propose an alternative action: YouTube debunkers - get yourselves together and produce a debunking insert for Comfort's intro and make it available online as a PDF and/or in print. A reference to any online videos wouldn't be a bad thing. Then it's down to the youtube community. If you are in college, then you are in a good position to help. Get print outs of the insert. Check your campus on November 19th, and if you see a group distributing copies of the book, get as many as you can. Get a copy for yourself, ask if you can have extra copies for your friends, ask your friends to go ask for copies, and ask other people you see carrying the book if you can have their copy, then stick the insert inside and redistribute the book. You can even hand out the insert as is.

This is a shameful thing that Kirk Cameron and the Banana Guy are doing by altering another person's book in order to push their agenda. But we can help to present the book the way it was intended some up to date debunking info for Comforts claims and keep young minds from being brainwashed by misinformation.

Investing effort and care into something is very therapeutic and self satisfying, even though I may die doesn't mean I shouldn't invest thought, insight, or create videos on my anger about people like ray comfort who applies a nonscientific and irrational ways of thinking on a scientific subject.
