More from the "Video Diary of a Small-Time Music Promoter" - An intimate peak inside of the studio during the recording sessions for the Marguerita Page CD, "All My Friends" at Signature Sound in San Diego.

Marguerita Page sings the lyrics that she wrote for Charlie Parker's classic tune "Donna Lee", while the sax virtuoso Charles McPherson offers several very-smokin' Parker-like alto solos.

  • @avril2 Also listen to Ernie Andrews sing Bob Russell's fine lyrics to "Do Nothing 'Til You Hear from Me" on Kenny Burrell's 'Ellington Is Forever, Vol. 1". Mose Allison has a nice version. too. This song was an early Ellington instrumental "Concerto for Cootie", which you can hear along with the follow-up "Tutti for Cootie" (both written for and featuring trumpeter Cootie Williams) on Duke's "The Great Paris Concert" on Atlantic, one of the best Live albums ever made.

  • @avril2 I took a look at the lyrics Mitchell Parrish added to 'Sophisticated Lady' and agree they sound pretty corny and hackneyed. Ellington's instrumentals often suffer from the addition of lyrics- I guess that had a lot to do with the choice of lyricist. There are rare exceptions like Johnny Mercer's wonderful 'Satin Doll', but Johnny was a true genius who worked with many composers over the years. Listen to Ernie Andrews sing 'Satin Doll' on Kenny Burrell's "Ellington Is Forever, Vol.2"

  • shit the man knows those changes well....

  • Why do people think it is a good idea to add words to tunes such as this?

The sylabals never fit and are clunky.

Adding words to 'Sophisticated Lady' is just as bad.

  • sax solo starts at 4:00

  • That's the one!
